The new girl's new gear

IMG_0175
The Viva bike had an obstacle from day one - no cargo capacity - no rack. Tying and looping my handbag & totes onto the handlebars was my immediate solution. Though dangerous. Don't try this at home, OK?

I hoofed around my work neighborhood and my home neighborhood only to be extremely disappointed that everyone only had black metal racks. There were a couple gray, painted metal racks but nothing to match the shiny chrome metal that's all over this bike.

One explanation I was given is that the shops stock black racks to cater to delivery boys.

I hated to order the things I wanted online, because you need to give your local bike shop business, so I got Ben at  Kickstand Bicycles to order them for me.

He ordered the rack I felt was best for this bike - the Wald Sports rear rack. About $20.
Cheap, simple, made in USA - Matches the viva's sexy chrome surfaces.

Here we are on Tuesday morning's commute.
Viva got a basket

He also added the Wald 585 rear grocery basket. I'm not in love with the grocery basket but it's a temporary and cost-effective solution ($15) Note: The bungee is strung through the purse handle.

I need some sweet new saddle bags for this bike.
I also may try to do this recipe to sew my own since my sewing machine is out lately.

Royal Ring Bell
I also ponied up about $4 for the most polite-sounding bicycle bell I've met - The Royal Ring Bell.

Also a lovely shiny metal with a stationery striker which helps when you're wearing gloves.

I got these new items Monday night and I was very happy to see the shop so busy. The weather was great but they also had busy foot traffic outside. They're not far from the UN.

It was also really cute to see that they play Pee Wee's Big Adventure on loop in their window.

Shoo Bird!

Yesterday when I got dressed-up like this: Monday
I had no idea that soon after I would be honked at and shooed like a pigeon by one angry, nasty cab driver (Medallion E121)

If you recognize my amazing rendition of the giant button statue, you will know this happened on the very wide 7th Ave. There was plenty room for both of us. Whatever. There are cool bike ladies out there who are stealing my heart. Like this girl.

So lucky! I want to be on the cover of a Bicycle Etiquette book - These people have safety covered.

Today/Tuesday I was a mess-pot of trends: Neon pink tank, polka dot skirt, floral shoes.

I put on Rhinestones to dress-up the tank.

I'm full of good strategies. These rhinestones distracted people all day!

In my Etiquette Book I will write someday, #1 will be "Do not shoo at any young ladies like they are literally birds/pigeons."

Happy Rain Ride

Got my ass rained on
I don't have anything negative to say about getting rained out on the way home because:
I was dying to get out of work like a caged animal. Get me out of here! I'll happily bike in the rain! Yeah! Set me free!

It's been so freaking hot in NYC- It was like a cool-off party surprise! I didn't consider leaving the bike at work and taking the subway for 3 seconds. Not even 3 whole seconds.

It's also extra-friendly in the rain. Pedestrians just seem more inquisitive to a drenched Julie.

The basil bag is waterproof! It kept my purse/bag dry.

After yesterday's naked bike ride, I felt so civilized in this get-up. Even though I'm channeling Punky Brewster.

I hope these shoes recover from the rain. They were the ultimate in soaked plastic shoes.

My camera may also have some new special effects. She needs a moment to dry out.
I used PhotoBooth to document the damage when I got home.

I look so pissed, right?

Matching your outfit to your bike 101

I didn't try to match my bike today, but it's a happy coincidence and of course I love the color palette.
Monday
This is a TJ Maxx $16 or $19.99 rainbow leopard print dress and a little girls section elastic glitter belt from H&M. Claire's boutique white bow sunglasses. J. Crew leopard tote in the basket. Patricia Field Polly heels. They're not the best bicycle shoes. I will give-in and admit that. But they're very comfortable.
Dangerous Heels for bike
My nail polish is Essie Tart Deco and at first I thought it looked mac & cheese, but it's grown on me and I'm so happy I see Gwen Stefani also has peachy-orange nails so that's good affirmation.

Two pink watches- Neither one set very accurately.
Dos pink watches
Sanrio 50th Anniversary McDonald's Happy Meal My Melody watch and Casio digital from Target.

New York City is finally stinky, sticky hot. Tomorrow I am gonna slut it up to beat the heat.

Bike bruises on display!

LadyBikers Bike Polite

I was super LadyBikerStyle this week! Girly biker!
july4-8
I feel a little guilty because it's not that hot here. I'm enjoying pretty pleasant and sometimes breezy rides in the mornings. (My commute takes place 8:15 - 8:45am approx.)
I BIKE POLITE
I'm so happy my I BIKE POLITE sign arrived from Transportation Alternatives! I have some craft ideas for this guy.

Get your badge here. There are some really cute ones!

I get super-happy seeing other ladies on my commute then my heart is BROKEN when they do rude and dangerous things.

Occasionally sweet old-lady pedestrians will Thank You
