The NYC Apartment - The Cherokee

The_Cherokee
Now that I don't live there anymore, I am slightly excited to reveal precisely where I lived the past three years in New York City. I think for bicycle commuters, it will be interesting to see what a fantastic bike-friendly address I had at The Cherokee. (The first two years in NYC we pretty much had shit apartments- this is the memorable, beautiful, interesting one.)

Here's an excerpt that explains more about the history and the beautiful architecture of the building:

With film, the physical city is often woven into the drama or story line. A century old act of humanitarianism left New York with a historic and architectural landmark that has been used as a modern day film setting. The former Shively Sanitary Tenements on East 77th St., sponsored by Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt in 1911, was built as low cost housing for recovering tuberculosis patients. Every room has floor to ceiling, triple sash windows, leading out to distinctive wrought iron balconies.

Flooded with light and fresh air, which at the time was the only treatment for TB, these apartments couldn’t have been more different from the typical, dark, dank, overcrowded, and airless tenements of that era. The street level entrances are open-air arcades covered by vaulted arches of intricately patterned Guastavino terra-cotta tiles (think the Oyster Bar in Grand Central). All the apartments are reached by spiral staircases from an open courtyard, with a built-in seat on each landing, so that the afflicted could rest on the way up!

This incredibly ornate Beaux-Arts landmark was used as a location for the 2005 Ewan McGregor film, titled STAY, in which he plays a psychiatrist. The architecture of the building is beautifully incorporated into a key scene in which Mr. McGregor’s character descends the dizzying spiral staircase, experiencing a different hallucination on each landing. A stunning metaphor for his own descent into mental illness.

For people who are interested in tiny NYC apartments, you may enjoy the little video tour I made on the very last day when we were extremely bored in the empty apartment waiting for the new tenants to take over.

At one point, I found this wonderful photograph of a woman standing on a balcony like ours:

For bike stuff, it was located here at the dot below in this quiet part of the UES with quick access to the East River Path. This is why it was so easy to make little jaunts up to Target in East Harlem. This is also why we took Bonnie, the dog, to Central Park on most sunny Sundays.

Are we sad we left? No. We paid about $1700 per month for less than 400 square feet. Are we glad we did it? Absolutely! It was a very beautiful building. Our unit was tiny and posed many organizational challenges, especially for me, working in fashion and the garment industry. Too many clothes to live here! This building also had a hum-dinger of a bicycle storage room.

On the Way - Persimmon "Night and Day Sofa!

persimmon_sofa
We've been talking about getting a new couch/sofa since our current one has a little hole in the pleather.
I found the Clark at West Elm, and fell in love with the idea of a sleek little sofa that folds down into a bed.

Matt/husband and I made a little deal and decided that we need to get an under-$500 sofa so we can do or buy something else too. I found this guy online Friday, discussed it and purchased it this morning. I'm super excited about it!

Google image searching has made extra, triple excited seeing Betty Draper at the children's psychiatrist sitting on a very similar model.

This year I'm seriously going to at least make Top 10 of the Mad Men photo contest. I've already consulted a photographer friend.

This orange, vintage style couch is going to look absolutely martini-glass smashing next to our gossip bench!

Saturday Business

I'm kind of sick and delicate today. I'm kind-of high on allergy medicine. I only had the strength to do some fall-cleaning that's not in the Martha Stewart Homekeeping Handbook (my bible.)

1. I threw away all the plants we killed this summer. It's a cute idea to grow stuff on our terrace, but it's not so cute to forget those plants exist and let them dry-up and turn to dust in the sun.

2. I cleaned my make-up brushes! This should really be every Saturday Business but this is the first time in weeks. They will perform better and feel better and stop contaminating my skin with dirty old funk.
Cleaned my brushes today

I have several MAC brand brushes, but I also have bunches of the $1 variety that have worked out great and lasted for years. You never know with make-up brushes. I'm hardest on my concealer brush & angled blush brush.

I rolled a towel at each end so they wouldn't lay flat and the ends wouldn't get bent while they dried.

3. I organized my jewelry & accessories a little bit. The overall situation isn't great. They really should all be in ONE PLACE together but they're not. But they're in the same area of my dressing area.

That gold watch came from my father's company on a milestone anniversary of him working there and I got it right after my mom died so it's almost 10 years old. It needs a new battery but I'm ready to wear it this fall & winter. It's skinny Gold Watch time. I also have a gold watch ring there and I hope a new battery can save it. It's really cute!

My chunky bracelets are in these containers from The Container Store.

This antique toolbox isn't the best thing for this storage...

I put all my pearl things in this Strawberry Shortcake food container for their own protection.

This is what my wardrobe looks like right now. It's time for us to do a fall-switch-out at our Mini-Storage unit.
Stolmen Wardrobe as of 10/9/10

Sorry to be repetitive... But if you don't already know - we live in a 375sf tenement apartment and I don't have a closet. My husband gets the (awful, skinny) closet and the drawers you see on the bottom here. My things that would typically be found in drawers are in the baskets & boxes you see on this wardrobe system.

I'm still so glad Laura Cattano, the professional organizer who came over and assessed the place acted like I didn't have that much clothes. Bless you, Laura!

Apartment + NYC Anniversary!

I'm very much at-home and in-love with living in New York City lately. June 8th marks 3 years of Matt & JPH in NYC. I've said this from day 1 - "I'm so glad we did this!" I love the opportunity. It truly was, and it truly is, the best time in our young lives to live in this fast, big, busy city. I am at the point where I know that I will feel a huge depression and sadness when and if a time comes to move away from here. A season of mourning will be in order.

So- We have lived in this NYC apartment for one year and for the first time in THREE YEARS - We are not moving in June! Poppin' Bottles Happy about this! My new everyday pocket (beat-the-shit-out-of-this-one-and-wear-it-on-my-wrist-when-I-ride-my-bike-eek!) camera has some cool Wide Angle + Panorama functions that you are about to see.

Our 2 rooms that make up our apartment are SUPER SKINNY as you will see.

Since my husband was away all weekend Camping, I did a really focused cleaning today and took pics. I submitted it to Apartment Therapy for their Home Tour section. I think there are contests for tiny apartment living that we can compete in. I think our apartment is about 500 square feet.

My husband is sick of this Cotton piece, but it reminds me of driving down to South East Arkansas (Monticello) to visit my Great Grandmother when I was little.

I think my faux-closet is a little hairy right now. There are some parts I want to buy (from IKEA it's birth-mother) to make it more efficient.
Extremely Narrow Bedroom

Saturday Night I was feeling extra home alone and in a state of ultimate peace and redesigned my website: jphardee.com
I created a new JPH signature but otherwise it's the same content in an updated package for Summer 2010.
